Labour’s Gilmore hides behind rhetoric and soundbites

30 June 2010

Refusal to debate shows cowardice on Labour’s part

Green Party TD Trevor Sargent today said Labour Party Leader Eamon Gilmore, is running scared after his Party’s astonishing u-turn on animal welfare.

Speaking after the Labour leader again dodged a debate on RTE Radio, Deputy Sargent said: “Eamon Gilmore refuses to debate live on air and instead relies on rhetoric and soundbites. Today, he refused to debate the issue of stag hunting with Green Party Leader John Gormley because he knows the Party’s u-turn on animal welfare has disgusted Labour voters. “

The Labour Party Leader has now refused several public debate challenges from the Green Party.

“Any talk about animal welfare issues slowing down the business of Government is false. It was the Labour Party who wanted to extend the debate time on this bill. Animal welfare is a relatively minor issue compared with the job of stabilising public finances and getting people back to work – I do not want to see any more valuable time spent on it.

“Labour shamelessly sat on the fence throughout the unions’ debate on the Croke Park agreement rather than showing leadership to working people. They have shown a muddled view on water charges and now have reneged on a long-term animal welfare policy, all in the hope of garnering a few more votes through a populist point of view,” concluded Deputy Sargent.

Sargent Announces €10,000 Grant to Seal Sanctuary

SARGENT ANNOUNCES €10,000 GRANT TO SEAL SANCTUARY

Mr. Trevor Sargent T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, today announced the award of an ex-gratia payment of €10,000 to the Irish Seal Sanctuary, Garristown, Co. Dublin to assist the organisation in its work over the coming year. This is part of an overall package of payments totalling €1,185,000 being made immediately to animal welfare organisations throughout the country to assist in their work in 2010.

Minister Sargent, acknowledging the contribution animal welfare bodies make said, “These welfare bodies play a vital role in animal welfare and require ongoing financial support from the general public to enable them fulfil their work in promoting animal welfare in Ireland”.  The Minister thanked all the welfare organisations in both urban and rural areas particularly for their efforts and the work being done by them in circumstances that are not always straightforward, particularly when dealing with difficult animal welfare cases.

Minister Sargent said that the funding for animal welfare organisations in 2009 was evidence of the Government’s commitment in the area of animal welfare. He appealed to parents and others to think responsibly when considering giving a pet as a present and asked people “to heed the warnings and advice offered by animal welfare bodies in this regard and urged people to think carefully before giving a pet as a gift at Christmas or at any other time of the year.”

Minister Sargent announces grants to animal welfare organisations

Mr Trevor Sargent T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, today announced the award of an ex-gratia payment of €10,000 to the Irish Seal Sanctuary, Garristown, Co Dublin to assist its work during 2009. This is part of an overall package of payments totalling €1,250,000 being made immediately to 110 animal welfare organisations throughout the country to assist in their work in 2009.

The Minister paying tribute to the animal welfare bodies operating throughout the country in both urban and rural areas said that “these groups do marvellous work in rescuing, rehabilitating and providing new homes for neglected animals”.  The Minister recognises that the ex-gratia funds do not cover the full costs incurred in meeting all the demands placed upon organisations and reminded people that “these welfare organisations which play such a vital role in animal welfare, particularly with regard to small animals still require the ongoing generous financial support from the general public to enable them fulfil their work to promote animal welfare and relieve animal suffering in Ireland”.

Minister Sargent said that the continued funding for animal welfare organisations was evidence of the Government’s commitment in the area of animal welfare. He appealed to parents and others to think responsibly when considering giving a pet as a Christmas present because taking ownership of a pet comes with a responsibility to the animal and the Minister went on to say that “the number of animals that are abandoned every year as soon as the Christmas novelty has worn off indicates that people are not giving due consideration to the commitment that is required in owning an animal”.  The Minister urged people to heed the warnings and advice offered by the animal welfare organisations in this regard.
