YEARS OF WORK PAYING OFF WITH NEW SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY CENTRE FOR KINSEALY MELROSE ON THE WAY

Tuesday, 15 February, 2011.

Tuesday began with a two  hour session meeting commuters outside Malahide Train Station beginning at a frosty dark hour of 7am.  We handed out a four page comprehensive update on work and progress with various transport projects from extending the DART to Balbriggan to Metro to the cycle and walkway across the Malahide estuary.

Afterwards, attended a Carers’ Association meeting for election candidates as one of three who turned up. Darragh and Clare were there too but where were the Labour and Fine Gael candidates? Maybe they feel they are already elected! They missed a very informative presentation and useful discussion. The message to me was carers also need to be cared for. Their responsibilities take a toll in many ways and Government needs to support them for the sake of their own health but also because they save huge costs for the state by preventing mass-hospitalisation of elderly  and infirm citizens.

Many many people I have worked with in Kinsealy Melrose area. Sadly others like Liam Rogers as a community leader and Rosaleen O’Toole as a marvellous event organizer for young people in the area, have now passed on at tragically young ages in each case.  Their legacies live on however and the building work in the new Scoil an Duinnínigh and the soon to start work on the new Community Centre will provide the long-awaited facilities this community needs.

When a church group come to my Swords clinic and separately the community representatives, I thought these groups could achieve more if we all worked together for the common good. I am especially happy, therefore,  that the co-operation of the community and a new church congregation Swords Baptist Church now  working together are providing a shared facility which reflects tolerance, vision and a mutually beneficial resulting building for all concerned.  John O’Brien in Fingal County Council tells me the public consultation six-week period is due to start soon so keep an eye on the local press or on www.fingalcoco.ie to have your say on this important development.

Possible Closure of Teagasc Kinsealy

11 February 2010

Re: Possible Closure of Kinsealy Research Centre

Minister Sargent has not sanctioned the closure of the Teagasc Research facility at Kinsealy nor has the Government made any decision to close the facility. The future of the Kinsealy centre is a matter for Teagasc, the Agriculture and Food Development Authority.  Under the Act establishing Teagasc, the Agriculture, (Research, Training and Advice) Act, 1988, Teagasc has statutory responsibility for the provision of education, advisory and training services to the agriculture sector. It is a matter for Teagasc and its Board to prioritise activities in the delivery of these services and to allocate its resources in accordance with these priorities. Ministerial responsibility is confined to matters of policy in accordance with the Act and the Minister does not interfere in the day-to-day operations of Teagasc.

It is understood that the Teagasc Authority recently agreed a change programme (Change Programme 2009 –2013: The Next Steps) for the organisation. It is also understand that the Change Programme will include a new plan for the development of Teagasc’s horticultural services.

Minister Sargent recognises the importance of the horticulture sector in Ireland and continues to act in the best interests of farmers and the sector in general. The Minister has just announced details of the third round of the grant aid scheme for the development of the horticulture sector under the National Development Plan (2007-2013). The scheme will fund projects in commercial horticultural production carried out during 2010. Aid is available at 40% (50% in the case of young farmers) of total eligible capital investment.  The scheme covers all horticultural sectors – protected crops, nursery crops, field vegetables, soft fruit, apples, beekeeping and in limited circumstances mushrooms – and is aimed at assisting growers to efficiently produce high quality products in what is now a very competitive market.

- New Shelters on 43 Bus Route

31 July 2008

Minister for Food & Horticulture and local T.D., Trevor Sargent has welcomed a recent statement from Bus Átha Cliath concerning two new proposed bus shelters.  Following a survey of both sides of the road at Kinsealy Inn Feltrim Road they have applied for planning permission for the bus shelters to be erected.

Green T.D. Sargent said: “I am delighted that the many commuters on the 43 bus route will soon have some comfort while waiting for the bus. This route is used by many workers and students on a daily basis.”

This follows representations to the Minister from concerned local people who in some cases have been using the bus stops for over 20 years.
